Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day, a harvest festival, is celebrated primarily in the US and Canada and traditionally it has been a time to give thanks for a bountiful harvest.  Even though it started out as a religious holiday, it is now known as a secular holiday, and Thanksgiving is sometimes referred to as Turkey Day. In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated the second Monday in October, and in the United States, it is celebrated the fourth Thursday in November.

The first Thanksgiving celebration was held in 1621 by the Plymouth Colony after they suffered a harsh Winter, and they invited the Wampanoag Indians to the celebration.  After this celebration, the thirteen colonies did not celebrate the holiday at the same time until 1777, and President George Washington declared it a holiday in 1789. To unite the colonies after the civil war President Lincoln with the encouragement of poet and editor Sarah J. Hale, Lincolon gave his Thanksgiving  Proclamation in 1963 which declared the last Thursday in November a day of thanks.

To make the Christmas shopping season longer in 1939, 1940, and 1941President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Thanksgiving the third Thursday in November, but controversy followed this act, and Congress passed a joint resolution in 1941 decreeing that Thanksgiving should fall on the fourth Thursday of November, where it has remained throughout history ever since 1941.

Second Online Meeting

Our students really enjoyed singing for the Columbian students. They practiced for days to prepare. They also enjoyed hearing the Columbian students read to them in spanish. In the future I would like to do this with my class again.

Brook and April Students singing the Five Fat Turkey Song

Second On-line Collaboration Event

I feel like everyone involved did a fantastic job. I loved how the Colombian teacher had different students to read the book, and she had the students to hold up the book, so the book could be read to our students, so they would know what the Colombian children were saying. I also think that Mary Williams, Brook Archer, and April Palmer did a great job teaching their children the Thanksgiving songs. I also want to say that Stacie David did a wonderful job creating the power point for our group, and I loved how she and Maureen McGee participated in the Five Fat Turkey song along with children, Brook and April while I took pictures. I also loved that the children were more involved in this event.
I will post pictures that I took at our event, and some pictures that I took of the art work that Brook's students did. I also took a picture of the tepee that her class had created that was placed right outside her classroom.

First Online Collaboration

I would say that our first online meeting was a success. Me and April Palmer's Class prepared a good morning song and previously reviewed some spanish words with the students. I did find some cons with this online event. It was really long for our children, especially at that age them having to sit still and pay attention for such a long period of time. It was also hard for them to comprehend what was going on. I think it was a little too advanced for them. Other that that I think they are looking forward to sharing their Turkey song with the children in Peru!

On-line Collaboration

Ms. Archer and Ms. Palmer did a great job preparing their students for the on-line collaboration. They taught their students how to speak to the Colombian students in Spanish, and they also taught their students a song to sing to the Colombian students. Ms. David did a great job in creating the slides, and she also read the students a book to keep them from moving around when they became restless. Ms. M. McGee helped made sure that the students were paying attention and participating in the collaboration. She also took pictures, and she also made sure that the students were following orders. I, Ms. N. McGee, took pictures, and I helped arranged the students, so they could be seen during the collaboration project. I will also like to thank Ms. Watts, Ms. Archer paraprofessional, for helping out during the on-line collaboration. She helped Ms. Archer get her students ready for the project, and she also helped out on the day of the project.

First On-Line Collaboration

During the first on-line collaboration, our group interacted with a school from Columbia. I thought that the students were eager to learn Spanish. They enjoyed being able to see themselves on the projector screen, but the students, which are pre-k and kindergarten, got restless after they were sitting still for about 30 minutes. The students were happy to speak to other students using the Spanish words that they had learned, and they did ask questions when the Colombian students started speaking. I think that all of the teachers that participated during our on-line collaboration session did a great job.
